When was the last time you made a New Year’s Resolution and stuck with it until you reached your goal? Trust me on this one, you aren’t alone! I know it’s April so I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m talking about New Year's Resolutions so let me explain a bit. We make these really big goals, which are fantastic, but we never really think about how we will accomplish them, we just make the grand statement that we will. Now that is a start but without actionable steps, we will never reach the goal. With these go to tips you will be able to stay on track to reach your overall goals but also set yourself up to be successful! It doesn’t matter if you’re working on a goal right now or are looking to start, these tips will help get you there!
Making a Plan
So you have your big goal, you are super excited and so motivated but do you have a plan? My guess is not entirely. Whenever I hear someone talking about their goals I always ask, “well how are you going to reach them?” and they stare blankly back at me, hesitate, and then say some minor things they will do. It isn’t their fault at all, they have fantastic intentions but we never talk about how we should reach a goal just that we should have them.
Once you make your goal the next thing you should do is make a plan on how you will get there. Are you trying to lose weight? Great, what changes are you going to make to your lifestyle? Are you trying to save money? Fantastic! How much will you put away each week to help you reach your goal? You need actionable steps you can monitor and measure to make sure what you are doing is actually helping you achieve your goal.
Making a plan is super important but also realize your plan can change. There is nothing wrong with trying another route to reach the same end result, especially if the original plan isn’t getting you the results you need, which is why you need to be able to measure them!
Set Smaller Goals That Lead to the Large Goal
Did you set out to achieve a really big goal? That is awesome but the thing with really big goals, is they take a long time to achieve. Now there isn’t anything wrong with that except along the way we tend to lose sight of the big goal or get overwhelmed with the process. This is a normal reaction but it shouldn’t be turning you away from accomplishing anything.
To get past this mindset try setting smaller goals related to the larger goal. For example if you’re trying to lose 50 pounds set goals of losing 10 pounds. Once you reach the 10 pound mark set a goal to reach another 10 pounds! When you break it into smaller pieces you feel accomplished by reaching the smaller goals and it helps you continue on your journey! And please don’t forget to celebrate your success! You may not have reached your overall goal but you are making progress and that calls for celebration!
