I wrote a post a while back comparing at home workouts to gym workouts. It really doesn't matter where you workout and we discussed positives and negatives to both. Today I want to spend a little more time with at home workouts and the mindset you need to have to make it work.
Let's talk about my day yesterday. I was up at 5:45 as I usually am to get ready for work and get my kids ready for their day. I am usually out the door around 6:15 or 6:30. Being a teacher I have a ton of work to do the second I get into my classroom. Yesterday I happened to have a day of meetings, which sounds like it would be easier but in reality it isn't. I spent my day discussing students who were struggling and coming up with strategies to help them be successful. When it was time to leave I grabbed my things and raced to my car. I don't tend to stay late at work because I have 2 small kids at home and I need to go home and be mom.
After a 30 minute drive home in the rain I was ready to start the second half of my day. There is really no down time in my day until my kids go to bed! My schedule typically looks like this. I get home, let the dog out, check homework folders, empty lunch and snack boxes, go put on my workout clothes and prepare for my workout. My kids are so used to this schedule by now they know I will be doing a workout and that I need at least 30 minutes to get it done. During that time they usually have a snack and either watch TV or play cars or build something. Then I stay in our play area and do my workout. It all sounds great right?
Well lets look a little more closely at my phrasing in the about paragraph. I definitely through the word "typically" in there. Yesterday my friends was NOT a typical day! My workout was only 20 minutes and in that 20 minutes my boys continued to ask for snacks even when I asked them not to, they fought over who was going to play with the hot wheels track, the dog tried chewing everything in sight, my phone rang at least 4 times, and my 3 year old fell down and was hysterically crying. 20 MINUTES! All of this happened in 20 minutes. I wanted to scream, I probably did to be honest.
These are the days where you need to absolutely dig so deep inside and really want it. I just kept saying forget it I'm going to quit but I knew that wouldn't make me happy later on. Was it hard? Oh absolutely. It was a very frustrating 20 minutes but after all this happened and I still pushed through I just started to laugh because I can't control everything that is going to happen but what I can control is how I respond to it. In this moment I decided I'm finishing this workout. I am not going to quit. So I hit pause, I put the dog back in his crate, I set the boys up with a movie and asked them to just let me finish my workout. I set myself up quickly for success and then continued right along.
I absolutely could have just quit and dealt with all the chaos and I would have made myself believe it was the right thing to do but I committed to working out at home. I promised myself that I would do my workout and as I've learned from Rachel Hollis, I don't break promises to myself. In this instance pressing pause and making those adjustments allowed me to finish my workout. Was it the most ideal situation having to stop? Nope! But at the end of the day I'm not training to be a professional athlete. I am working out to better my health and pressing pause is ok as long as you get right back to it!
Be Strong!
